About Bright Software Group

At Bright, we are powering the digital practice of tomorrow – today.

We deliver products that help accountants, payroll bureaus, and businesses across the UK and Ireland work smarter and win more. Our innovative solutions and outstanding customer experiences enable our customers to run their businesses efficiently and serve their customers brilliantly.

We believe understanding is the difference between working and winning.

The Role

We are looking for a proactive Software Engineer to strengthen the backend of the TimeKeeper platform. The role is Python-led, covering the services, APIs and data layer behind our web and mobile applications, and working closely with engineers across the stack.

It suits an engineer who enjoys solving problems across a varied technology stack and picks up new tools quickly. Proficiency in every technology listed below is not expected; being proactive and keen to learn is what matters most.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build and maintain backend services in Python (Flask) that power the TimeKeeper platform
  • Develop and improve APIs, data models and Postgres queries, with a focus on reliability and performance
  • Shape features based on customer and team feedback, and deliver them alongside the web and mobile teams
  • Write automated tests, investigate issues and fix bugs
  • Review pull requests and share knowledge with the wider team
  • Contribute to infrastructure and deployment work across AWS, Terraform and Redis
  • Prioritise and manage multiple tasks, delivering on time and picking up new topics as needed
  • Build strong working relationships and contribute positively to the team

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Minimum 4 years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, with a strong backend focus
  • Professional experience building and maintaining backend services and APIs in Python
  • Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases
  • Experience writing automated tests and reviewing code
  • Comfortable working alongside AI tools; curious about how technology can make you better at your job

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Python frameworks and libraries such as Flask, Django or SQLAlchemy
  • Relevant AWS infrastructure experience, including Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
  • Experience with Postgres and Redis in production
  • Familiarity with React or React Native, enough to work effectively with front-end colleagues
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field

The Technology Stack

• Python (Flask) – Backend services

• Postgres – Database

• Redis – Application cache layer

• AWS – Infrastructure

• Terraform – Infrastructure as Code

• React – Web application

• React Native – Mobile application

Don’t worry if you aren’t proficient in all of these, the main thing is you are proactive and able to pick new things up.

Working At Bright

Bright builds software that genuinely makes people's working lives easier. That matters — and you'll never have to apologise for what you're selling.

But honestly, the first thing people mention is the culture. It's collaborative, it's human, and we're not a small company anymore, but it still feels like one — in the best way. People are genuinely looked after here — that's not just something we say.

You get real autonomy to learn, grow, and make an impact. And right now is a genuinely exciting time to join. We're growing fast, investing heavily in AI, and that creates real opportunity — for the business and for the people in it.

It's a place where curious people thrive.
