Summary

We are seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join Skyler Contracting Ltd as a Level 2 Roofing Waterproof Membrane Apprentice. This is an excellent opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining hands-on experience in roofing while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Plus overtime where possible.

What you'll do at work

As a Roofing Apprentice, you will learn the essential skills and knowledge required to install, maintain, and repair roofing systems safely and to industry standards. This is an earn-while-you-learn opportunity, combining practical site experience with formal training leading to a recognised qualification.

Key Responsibilities:

Health & Safety Compliance

Follow all site safety rules, wear PPE, and apply safe working practices when working at height and handling materials

Material Handling & Preparation

Safely move, lift, and store roofing materials such as waterproof  membranes and insulation

Measuring & Marking Out

Interpret drawings and specifications, measure roof areas, and mark out positions for membranes

Installing Roof Coverings

Fit and secure roofing components (membranes) to the correct specification

Underlay & Insulation

Install underlay membranes and insulation layers safely and correctly

Stripping & Reclaiming

Remove old roof coverings and reclaim reusable materials where required

Tool Use & Maintenance

Use hand and power tools correctly and maintain them in safe working condition

Portfolio & Learning Activities

Record evidence of skills, knowledge, and behaviours for apprenticeship portfolio during practical tasks

What you'll learn

• Work safely and be aware of key health, safety and welfare issues
• Plan and carry out their work to commercial standards of quality and speed
• Move, handle and store resources, complying with relevant legislation and guidance
• Interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from trade supervisors and site managers
• Select the required materials and resources to carry out the work
• Set up, check and operate plant and/or equipment
• Install related materials and components to a given specification
• Use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated equipment
• Access, interpret and use drawings and specifications to carry out work
• Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, finishing, positioning and securing
• Install plain tiles, interlocking tiles, natural slates and fibre-cement slates
• Install underlay, battens and related roofing components
• Install pre-formed lead and/or proprietary flashings
• Install dry and wet fixed products to verges, hips, ridge and valleys
• Install insulation and ventilation products for warm and cold roof construction
• Install roof windows and flashing kits
• Clean, dry and prepare surfaces for specified system
• Install vapour control layers to prevent vapour coming through the building to protect insulation
• Install mechanically fixed and/or adhered insulation as required by the given specification
• Install reinforced bitumen, single-ply and liquid applied waterproofing systems
• Terminate waterproofing systems at the perimeter upstands and/or open edges to the given specification
• Maintain and repair flat and/or pitched roofs (in excess of 10 degrees)
• Install perimeter details (edge trims, counter flashings termination bars)
• Work around outlets, pipes, soil and vent fittings, safety systems and roof lights
• Assess suitability of structure to receive cladding materials
• Install built-up, standing seam, secret fix, composite and fibre-cement systems and rainwater goods
• Maintain, repair and over-sheet existing roofs
• Install flashings, vents, fittings and components as appropriate to the specification.
• Work around penetrations and upstands

Training schedule

• Block release training will take place at the SIMIAN London Academy of Sustainable Construction (LASC) in Waltham Forest
• Every 6 weeks, you will attend 5 days block-release training. A full timetable will be shared with you when you enrol

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

• English (grade 4)
• Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
